Meet a Future Organic Farmers Grantee–Travis Prendergast

Future Organic Farmers Grantee Travis Pendergast

Travis Prendergast is a CCOF Future Organic Farmers Grantee.

Travis Prendergast runs Harvest Moon Homestead, a small farm in Humboldt County, CA, with his wife. They grow a mix of specialty cut flowers, mixed vegetables, and fruits, selling through local farmers markets and grocery accounts. Their farming practices aim to grow nutrient-dense food and high-quality products without compromising soil health, while also prioritizing carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and pollinator habitat.

Prendergast is also a student in the Climate Resilient Farmer Program, a regional training offered in partnership with the North Coast Growers Association and University of California Cooperative Extension, Davis (UCCE). Through this program, he is developing the skills and knowledge needed to implement sustainable farming practices and build a resilient farm business. “The program’s focus on climate-adaptive techniques will help me manage water resources, improve soil health, and enhance biodiversity on my farm,” he says, “essential for long-term sustainability in the face of climate challenges.”

“Additionally,” Prendergast says, “the business training I’m receiving will equip me with the tools necessary to scale my farm, manage finances, and hire employees. The hands-on experience with experienced local farmers will allow me to refine my farming practices, while the mentorship opportunities will offer guidance as I work toward creating a thriving, community-centered farm. This comprehensive training will enable me to achieve my goals of expanding my farm, supporting local food systems, and contributing to the broader organic movement.”

Prendergast aims to expand his current farming operation by one acre, increasing production of organic vegetables, fruits, and cut flowers for local markets and schools. “I plan to create employment opportunities, fostering a work environment that values regenerative farming practices,” he says. “Beyond farming, I want to advocate for organic agriculture, share my knowledge with others, and contribute to building a stronger local food system.”

Through his farm’s long-term success, Prendergast hopes to become a mentor for new organic farmers and help them navigate the challenges of sustainable farming. “Through education, community involvement, and innovation, I hope to play an active role in the growth of organic agriculture and its potential to combat climate change and enhance food sovereignty,” he says. “Ultimately, I hope to contribute to a stronger, more resilient local food system, providing fresh organic products while promoting environmentally conscious practices.”

The CCOF Foundation is proud to support producers like Logan Wilson with the Future Organic Farmers grant, which provides $5,000 scholarships to college and vocational students training for careers in organic.
