Under federal organic standards (7 CFR § 205.204), organic producers must use organic seeds, annual seedlings, and planting stock whenever commercially available. Nonorganic seeds and planting stock may only be used if equivalent organic varieties are not commercially available.
Historically, sourcing certified organic strawberry starts has been a challenge, but organic options are now available. Below is a list of CCOF-certified operations offering organic strawberry starts for the 2025 season:
Innovative Organic Nursery (ION), Watsonville, California
ION offers starts for strawberry varieties Albion, Cabrillo, Chandler, Fronteras, Monterey, San Andreas, and Seascape. They are now accepting preorders for fall 2025, with special early-bird pricing available through March 31. Shipping will begin in October 2025 or can be held in cold storage for planting through April 2026. ION also has 2024 organic strawberry and raspberry nursery stock available for planting this spring. Strawberry cultivars include the varieties listed above, plus Denali. Raspberry cultivars include Yellow Jewel and Ruby Jewel.
