Small-scale organic farmers in California’s San Joaquin Valley and Central Coast face significant challenges in accessing the resources they need to succeed—including technical support, financial assistance, and land access. To help bridge these gaps, the CCOF Foundation, American Farmland Trust (AFT), and Daily Harvest formed a partnership to strengthen the viability of organic farms. Through direct grants, hands-on training, and mentorship, this initiative provided farmers with the tools needed to transition to organic farming while improving soil health and long-term farm success.
This multi-year program supported farmers at different levels, from local outreach events to one-on-one technical and financial assistance. Over three years, 30 farms each received $30,000 grants to aid in their transition to organic certification—helping convert more than 190 acres of farmland. Farmers also gained valuable knowledge through 23 community-based events on topics like soil and water management, financial literacy, and market access. Additionally, mentorship programs connected transitioning farmers with experienced organic growers, fostering knowledge-sharing and business growth.
Beyond helping farmers improve their operations, this initiative also explored ways to integrate small-scale producers into larger supply chains. While challenges remain—such as securing stable land access and expanding market opportunities—the program demonstrated the power of community-driven collaboration. By continuing to invest in technical assistance, mentorship, and market connections, this partnership is paving the way for a stronger and more resilient organic farming community.
We are deeply grateful to the teams at American Farmland Trust and Daily Harvest for making this iteration of CCOF’s Organic Transition Program possible. Learn more about our Organic Transition programs here.
