Trees of Life Farm


Trees of Life Farm is a 10 acre sustainably maintained organic farm, located on an unspoiled ridge above the town of Occidental, roughly 60 miles north of San Francisco. The owner and farmer, Rachel Stauffer, started the farm from scratch in 2012 with the idea of working with nature rather than against it, aiming to promoting biodiversity and ecological balance. Half of the land is wild, shared with the local bobcats, fox, hawks, owls, badgers, and a host of birds, insects, frogs and other creatures that call the place home.
On the cultivated land, there are over 50 varieties of heirloom and specialty apples, pears and quince. All were selected with flavor in mind, and the particular qualities at which they excel fresh eating, making pie, baking, fresh juice, and/or making vintage hard cider.
And what may be most unique about the farm, is an unusual collection of small, attractive, delicious sweet and pink-fleshed apples of “crab” heritage that have unusual flavor profiles
(think apple/berry or apple/Muscat grape or apple/spritely citrus flavors), all developed by California master horticulturalist/pomologist Albert Etter. These apples deliciously expand the concept of what an apple can taste like.
