USDA Renews Carrageenan and 16 Substances to National List

USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) announced the renewal of 17 substances to the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances (National List) as part of the 2018 Sunset Review process. Notably, USDA renewed carrageenan to the National List, which the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) had recommended for removal.

USDA is accepting nominations for the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB). The deadline to submit nominations is May 17, 2019.
 
Nominations must include a resume and an AD-755 Application form, and must be postmarked on or before May 17, 2019.

USDA Seeks Nominations for the National Organic Standards Board

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is seeking nominations to fill five vacancies on the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB), a federal advisory committee whose 15 members represent the entire organic sector and whose recommendations are an important part of the organic standards development process. Appointees will serve a five-year term of office beginning January 24, 2017.

The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) is a citizen advisory board that offers input to the National Organic Program on allowed materials and practices in certified organic production. Appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, the NOSB meets twice a year to review organic materials and policies.

Secretary Tom Vilsack recently appointed six new members to the NOSB who will begin serving their terms in 2016.
