Rodale Celebrates 35th Year of Farming Systems Trial

The Rodale Institute in Pennsylvania began a side-by-side comparison of organic and conventional farming back in 1981. Today, the data collected in Rodale’s Farming Systems Trial show that organic farming produces competitive yields, builds higher levels of soil organic matter, retains more soil moisture, and is more profitable compared to conventional practices.

Sales of California Organic Processed Products Grow by $1.5 Billion

According to a recently released report by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), California’s gross sales revenue from certified organic processed products grew from $11.65 billion in 2017 to $13.17 billion in 2018. These figures show continued growth for the sector, which includes organic products such as cheese, fruit juice, and dried pasta.

Monterey calls organic growers near and far this coming winter for the Organic Grower Summit on December 4 and 5. Alongside holiday décor and the sounds of seagulls, seals, and soil health discussions, the CCOF Foundation will once again host its annual benefit dinner on December 4, 2019.

Sean Feder Appointed to State Organic Advisory Board; Meeting Scheduled During EcoFarm

CCOF’s Director of Inspection Services Sean Feder has been appointed by California’s Secretary of Food and Agriculture Karen Ross to the alternate certifier seat on the California Organic Products Advisory Committee (COPAC).
 
COPAC advises the secretary on education, outreach, and technical assistance for organic producers in the state. The committee is comprised of 15 primary members plus alternates for each seat. 
 
Term limits opened up a number of primary producer seats that were filled with alternate members.

Senate Ag Committee Includes Origin of Livestock Rule in Appropriations Bill

Last week the United States Senate Agriculture Committee passed the Agriculture Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2020. In the bill, USDA is required to issue the Origin of Livestock rule that incorporates public comments from the proposal rule within 180 days of the bill becoming law.
