My plan for my FFA Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) project is to expand my organic beef herd. I now have two bred cows and two six-month-old calves, which run with my father's organic beef. I want to purchase a registered Black Angus bull to breed my Hereford cattle, which will give me the benefit of heterosis as I work towards an all crossbred commercial organic herd. My cattle are on grass all summer with salt and mineral blocks. They get certified organic ground corn and corn silage in the winter from an organic crop farm thirty miles away.

I plan to begin an FFA Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) project raising organic vegetables. I work for a produce grower who attends farmers’ markets and I have seen how well organically produced vegetables sell. I selected a 100'x60' area at my parent's home for my organic garden. I know a lot about growing vegetables because of my employment and they have agreed to let me sell my produce at their seven farmers’ market locations.

My family started a large vegetable garden two years ago, and it soon became my project. This past year, my neighbor allowed me to expand my garden at her house, doubling the size of my overall garden. Being in 4-H for 9 years has also helped me learn about business and following through on projects. This year I grew lettuce and kale and sold it to a local health food store. When the owner of the local store tried my lettuce and heard it was organic, she was so excited. She couldn't keep it on the shelf at the store.

My FFA Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) plan is to purchase breeding hens and roosters from an NPIP certified local breeder to start my own organic hatchery. I plan to purchase eighteen hens and three roosters. There will be three breeds, each covering a variety of poultry most in demand while remaining a heritage breed. Each month I will take orders for chicks, deliver, and hatch the orders from the previous month. I will adhere to USDA organic standards. I also plan to free range all poultry to ensure the highest quality of life.

This is the second year that I received a Future Organic Farmer Grant for my National FFA Organization Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) to raise organic market swine. I plan to buy a hog and enough organic feed to last me the length of my project, which is from March to July. I will go to any swine educations meetings my FFA offers and work with my teachers to learn more about organic agriculture, so I can expand my organic SAE.

Congratulations Laila!

I plan to produce high-protein-based organic poultry feed by raising crickets, meal worms, and earthworms. There is also another specialty market in crickets and meal worms for pet use, i.e., for lizards, small snakes, and other reptiles. This is a small scope project with a start of 1,500 insects. My parents own poultry to test products and record production differences between store pellets and my products. This Supervised Agricultural Experience project will be sustainable by selling my products to local poultry producers.

Congratulations Matt!
