The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and California Department of Resources, Recycling, and Recovery (CalRecycle) are developing a Statewide Compost Strategy to increase the availability, affordability, and use of high-quality compost.
This strategy is expected to inform near-term state policies, investments, and regulations affecting compost production and use.
We believe that getting this strategy right is both urgent and important, considering that producers are facing:
- Record-high fertilizer prices
- Strict new groundwater, water quality, and nitrogen regulations
- Complex on-farm and on-dairy composting regulations
- Tight margins that make purchasing compost and compost-related equipment and infrastructure difficult
We are asking farmers and dairies in our network to share their valuable perspective with these agencies by taking a 15-minute, anonymous survey to answer questions about their compost production, use, and challenges.
