Sienna Radelfinger is a CCOF Future Organic Farmers Grantee.
Growing up on her parents’ organic Jersey dairy farm in Ferndale, California deeply influenced Sienna Radelfinger’s career aspirations in organic agriculture. “Since I was young, I’ve been immersed in the dairy—milking cows, feeding bottle calves, and learning firsthand about the rewards and challenges of farming,” she says. “I’m currently attending Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, CA in Agricultural Business and I am on track to transfer to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA to get my degree in agriculture business. I plan to obtain my master’s degree as well.”
After graduation, Radelfinger envisions starting her own organic dairy farm or taking over her parents’ operation. “For me, it’s about caring for the land and being mindful of the environment. I want to use innovative methods to improve efficiency while reducing harm to the environment.” She plans to do this by rotating where the cows graze, composting waste, and finding natural ways to control pests. She says, “Ultimately, my goal is to continue the legacy of sustainable farming that I grew up with.”
Radelfinger is pursuing academic studies in organic agriculture and a bachelor’s degree in agricultural business to achieve her goal of one day running an organic dairy farm. “Attending a four-year college will equip me with essential knowledge and skills in sustainable farming practices and financial management,” she says. “This education will enable me to keep track of my finances meticulously, adhere to organic principles, and ensure the economic viability of my dairy operation.”
In the organic sector, Radelfinger sees herself as a multifaceted contributor, blending roles as a farmer, advocate, and innovator. “My goal is to establish a successful organic dairy farm renowned for sustainability and quality. Beyond farming, I’ll advocate for organics through local organizations and industry initiatives. I aim to innovate by exploring new technologies and practices to enhance efficiency and sustainability,” she says. “Overall, I’m committed to advancing organic agriculture for a more resilient and equitable food system.”
