Planning and Planting the Small Orchard Block

This new short course will offer a wealth of information from orchard expert, Orin Martin, long-time manager of the Alan Chadwick Garden and instructor at the UC Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology. The course will walk participants through the planning and planting of a new apple orchard block at the UCSC Farm, from site selection and soil preparation to sourcing and planting quality trees (in quality holes).

Fruit Tree Grafting for the Home Gardener and Small Scale Grower

Learn to graft fruit trees and go home with one! Join Sharon Zo for this hands-on workshop at the UCSC Hay Barn. Sharon will cover the basics of rootstocks and scion selection, the importance of a sharp, quality grafting knife, and timing for the best luck with your graft. She’ll demonstrate how to cleft graft and if there's time, a whip & tongue graft. Students will then cleft graft an apple tree to take home on rootstock with a selection of scions from the Chadwick Garden to choose from.

Organic Citrus Growing Short Course

Seasoned citrus growers will provide detailed information appropriate for a range of growers, focused on a diverse range of citrus production. Presenters include Chadwick Garden Manager Orin Martin, Farm Garden Manager Christof Bernau, and Daniel Paduano Farm Manager and Co-owner of Abounding Harvest Mountain Farm.

This course will begin with an online introductory lecture on February 9th. Instructor Orin Martin will share a presentation on getting started with citrus that will include video demonstrations.
