2014 WUSATA Explore Exporting Workshop

Next week, the Western United States Agriculture Trade Association (WUSATA), in partnership with California Department of Food and Agriculture and the Centers for International Trade Development, will provide an overview of export resources and training for interested food businesses.

AMS Releases Organic Enforcement Plan of Action Summary

USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) and the National Organic Program (NOP) recently released their Summary of Activities and Overview Action Plan. The Summary of Activities summarizes NOP enforcement activities since fall 2017. The Overview Action Plan sets forth NOP’s planned enforcement and oversight activities.

Brazilian Ministry of Ag Visits CCOF Certified Farms

On April 29-30, 2014, three federal inspectors from the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA), and a USDA/Foreign Agricultural Services (FAS) Brazil Agricultural Marketing Specialist, toured CCOF-certified farms in the Davis, CA area.

CCOF Certification Services President Appointed to Agricultural Trade Advisory Committee

On June 26, 2014 Jake Lewin, CCOF Certification Services President, was announced as one of the seven additional members to join the Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee (ATAC) for Trade in fruits and vegetables. The ATAC members were appointed by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman, with the intention of ensuring the commercial and economic interests of various agricultural sectors are properly reflected in U.S. trade policies.

U.S.–Japan Equivalency Agreement Effective January 1, 2014

The U.S.–Japan Equivalency Agreement is now effective! Organic product certified in either the United States or Japan may now be sold as organic in either market. Lewin and Agricultural Delegation Tighten Trade Relations with Mexico

CCOF is honored to have our President of CCOF Certification Services, LLC, Jake Lewin, travel with Governor Jerry Brown's Mexico Trade DelegationThis trade mission was intended to address trade issues between California and Mexico. An agricultural delegation led by California Secretary of Agriculture, Karen Ross, addressed important agricultural issues.

CCOF is partnering with the California Centers for International Trade Development to offer comprehensive training in exporting California specialty crops.

The course, CalAgX, consists of a series of six half-day sessions and will be held at three locations, Sacramento, Clovis, and Lancaster, starting August 5 and ending September 25 (see schedule). The program is aimed at businesses new to exporting.

Out-of-State Sales Now Taxable in Some States

Organic seed producers and companies making out-of-state sales may be impacted by the recent decision by the Supreme Court of the United States on South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc. The decision allows states to charge sales tax on out-of-state purchases, even if the seller does not have a physical presence in the taxing state.

President of CCOF Certification Services Speaks on Organic Import Panel at NOSB Meeting

CCOF Certification Services LLC President Jake Lewin presented on an expert panel discussing organic imports at the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) meeting in Tucson, Arizona. The panelists discussed oversight of organic imports and tracking organic products throughout the supply chain. 
 
“We have feasible, clear steps that we can take to shore up certifier oversight of imports and allegations of fraud,” said Lewin in his opening remarks.
