The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) generally meets twice each year in a public forum to discuss and vote on recommendations to the USDA. These recommendations help the Department develop and refine the organic standards.

Based on input from the Board and members of the organic community, the NOSB currently plans to resume in-person meetings in October 2021, subject to federal, state, and local guidance on in-person meetings at that time.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) is now accepting proposals for the 2021 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (SCBGP). This one-time additional funding from the federal government to state departments of agriculture addresses COVID-19 impacts on the food system.

The Center for Food Security and Public Health at Iowa State University has launched The Livestock Project to create tools and trainings for organic producers and veterinarians on organic animal health care.

The Center is conducting a national survey to understand the unique needs of organic dairy, beef, sheep, goat, swine, and poultry producers. The results will guide the development of tools and materials to help you keep your animals healthy and prevent disease. The survey will only take about 10 minutes to complete.

The Organic Foods Production Act created the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances (National List) as a tool for managing the substances used in organic production over time. In general, natural substances are allowed in organic, and synthetic substances are prohibited. The National List identifies the limited exceptions to these general rules. North Coast Chapter Meeting

On Thursday, June 17 the CCOF North Coast Chapter hosted their annual chapter meeting at Preston Farm and Winery in Healdsburg, California. The meeting marked a return to in-person meetings for CCOF chapters after a year of virtual Zoom meetings. The Organic Trade Association’s 2021 Organic Industry Survey reports that sales of organic products—including food and nonfood categories—grew by 12.4 percent in 2020 to total $61.9 billion in sales nationwide.

The $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, passed by Congress to help America recover from COVID-19, includes $5 billion in farm debt relief for producers who are members of socially disadvantaged groups that have historically been subject to discrimination and underserved by U.S. government programs.
