Pueblo Vista Magnet Elementary School

Napa, California

The mission of Pueblo Vista Magnet School is to promote environmental literacy through bilingual education. The school community strives to develop biliterate learners whose ability to engage in critical thinking, collaboration, communication, citizenship, character, and creativity leads to a more environmentally-just society. Organic gardening is an ideal context for developing these habits of mind by bringing science learning to life in the school garden.

As a result of this grant, the school had a reason to plant more and different kinds of crops. The students selected varieties based on parent input and research. The school has over a dozen different crops growing right now, not including berries and fruit trees, which are also coming into production soon. They will have a soft open of their market this spring, so that next year, they will be ready to sell at every school event.

The students took ownership of their crops. For instance, the girls who ordered the different carrot varieties sowed those seeds and made the signs to label the garden bed. In this way, they become experts who can share their knowledge with their families. This project inspired the school to register as the first “Jr. Master Gardener” site in Napa, so students who want to go deeper with learning organic agriculture and horticulture can opt into that experience.

Thank you to Pueblo Vista Magnet Elementary School for sharing your organic project!

Please join us in congratulating the recipients of the CCOF Foundationu2019s Future Organic Farmer Grants.
