Take Action to Protect NOP Funding!

Support continued funding of the National Organic Program (NOP) by using the Organic Trade Association’s portal to contact your representatives and convey the importance of continuing strong NOP oversight over organic certification.
The House Appropriations Committee could affect NOP funding in several ways. One interference tactic is to add rider bills to budget bills that would block funding. The Organic Livestock and Poultry Practices (OLPP) rule has been targeted by some special interest groups and is at risk of getting derailed by a rider bill that might block its implementation. Blocking OLPP could negatively affect public perception of the NOP, sets a dangerous precedent of congressional interference, and thwarts NOP’s legal and transparent rulemaking process.
Organic agriculture will also be discussed at a Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry hearing titled “Opportunities in Global and Local Markets, Specialty Crops, and Organics: Perspectives for the 2018 Farm Bill” on July 13, 2017 at 7am PST. The hearing will be live-streamed online with a recording and copies of the testimonies given by witnesses posted shortly after. The hearing will be the first time that the Senate committee will discuss organic agriculture in the 2018 Farm Bill. The hearing is a great opportunity to learn what information legislators might need help them better understand organic agriculture.
