NOSB Releases Meeting Materials

The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) released their meeting materials ahead of their upcoming meeting on October 24-26, 2018 in St. Paul, Minnesota. 
 
Members of the public are encouraged to submit public comments via Regulations.gov using docket number AMS-NOP-18-0029-0001 until October 4, 2018. Additionally, oral comments will be accepted in-person and through pre-meeting webinars.
 
NOSB reviews all substances on the National List every five years to determine their status in organic production. NOSB discussed the substances at their spring 2018 meeting in Tucson, AZ and completed preliminary reviews for each. Members of the board will use that information and comments provided by the organic community to vote on relisting the materials or removing them from the National List. NOSB will vote on the following substances:
 
Crop scope substances:
  • Alcohols: ethanol, isopropanol
  • Sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate
  • Newspaper or other recycled paper
  • Plastic mulch and covers
  • Aqueous potassium silicate
  • Elemental sulfur
  • Lime sulfur
  • Sucrose octanoate esters
  • Hydrated lime
  • Liquid fish products
  • Sulfurous acid
  • Ethylene
  • Microcrystalline cheesewax
  • Potassium chloride
 
Handling scope substances:
  • Calcium carbonate
  • Flavors
  • Gellan gum
  • Oxygen
  • Potassium chloride
  • Alginates
  • Calcium hydroxide
  • Ethylene
  • Glycerides (mono and di)
  • Magnesium stearate
  • Phosphoric acid
  • Potassium carbonate
  • Sulfur dioxide
  • Xanthan gum
  • Fructooligosaccharides (FOS)
  • Gums: Arabic, Carob bean, Guar, Locust bean
  • Lecithin - de-oiled
  • Tragacanth gum

In addition, NOSB will consider the discussion documents, proposals, and material petitions.
