NOSB Proposals Released; Comment Period Open Through October 26

The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) will discuss and vote on recommendations concerning organic production at its upcoming meeting in St. Louis, Missouri, November 16-18, 2016. We encourage you to review the meeting agenda and supporting materials and submit a comment on issues impacting your operation.

Meeting Topics and Materials

The NOSB will discuss and vote on many important topics, including:

  • Hydroponic/aquaponic/bioponic/aeroponic and container-based production
  • Crop materials scheduled for sunset in 2018 including:
    • Copper sulfate
    • Calcium chloride
    • Peracetic acid
  • Strengthening guidance on organic seed and planting stock
  • Handling materials scheduled for sunset in 2018 including:
    • Agar-agar
    • Animal enzymes
    • Carrageenan
    • Tartaric acid
    • Cellulose
    • Potassium hydroxide
    • Silicon dioxide
    • Beta-carotene extract
  • Marine materials used in handling
  • A petition to remove ivermectin from the National List
  • Proposed Excluded Methods (GMOs) Terminology

Submit Your Comment

There are three ways to provide public comment:

  1. Submit written comment by October 26, 2016. Write a letter on your letterhead and upload or write your comment directly. Click the “comment now!” button and follow the instructions.
  2. Sign up to present an oral comment during the commenting webinar on Thursday, November 3, 1:00-4:00 p.m. EST. Comment slots are 3-minutes.
  3. Present oral comment during the face-to-face meeting in St. Louis. Public comments will be taken on November 16 17.
