NOSB Accepting Comments Through October 1 on the Fall 2020 Meeting Agenda

The deadlines to submit public comments and register for oral comments to the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) at their virtual fall meeting in St. Paul, Minnesota, are approaching! We encourage members of the organic community to submit public comments on the substances up for re-listing or removal from the National List of Allowed & Prohibited Substances and the other NOSB agenda items.

Handling Substances:

  • Kaolin
  • Sodium bicarbonate
  • Waxes - nonsynthetic (Wood resin)
  • Ammonium bicarbonate - for use only as a leavening agent
  • Ammonium carbonate - for use only as a leavening agent
  • Calcium phosphates (monobasic, dibasic, and tribasic)
  • Ozone
  • Sodium hydroxide - prohibited for use in lye peeling of fruits and vegetables
  • Inulin-oligofructose enriched (IOE) (CAS # 9005-80-5)
  • Kelp - for use only as a thickener and dietary supplement
  • Orange shellac-unbleached (CAS # 9000-59-3)
  • Cornstarch (native)
  • Sweet potato starch - for bean thread production only
  • Turkish bay leaves
  • Whey protein concentrate (petitioned for removal)
  • Carnauba wax
  • Colors

Livestock Substances:

  • Butorphanol
  • Flunixin
  • Magnesium hydroxide
  • Poloxalene
  • Formic acid
  • Excipients
  • EPA List 4 - Inerts of Minimal Concern
  • Strychnine

Crop Substances:

  • Soap-based algicide/demossers
  • Ammonium carbonate
  • Soaps, insecticidal
  • Vitamin D3, as rodenticides
  • Aquatic plant extracts (other than hydrolyzed)
  • Lignin sulfonate-chelating agent, dust suppressant
  • Sodium silicate (as floating agents in postharvest handling)
  • EPA List 4 - Inerts of Minimal Concern
  • Arsenic
  • Strychnine

• Submit feedback on the NOSB Subcommittee proposals via Regulations.gov. (Docket # AMS-NOP-20-0041). 

Deadline: Written comments must be received by 11:59 p.m. October 1, 2020, so that the Board has time to review them before the meeting.
