Keeping Organic Alive for Future Generations: Spotlight on Duncan Family Farms

For all the philanthropic work Arnott and Kathleen Duncan do, it may surprise you to learn that they are farmers first and nonprofit professionals second. For nearly three decades, the Duncans have worked to educate the next generation of agriculture professionals. From offering educational farm tours in the past, to providing support for current employees and their families via Duncan Family Farms University, offering an Education Assistance Program for their employees, and even hosting a book drive that provided books to students in communities where they are rooted, Duncan Family Farms continues to positively impact the organic farming community in Arizona and beyond.

Arnott Duncan is a fourth-generation farmer. He has an inherent understanding of the importance of passing the torch (or farm hose) to the next generation of would-be farmers. In a time when many youth seem more preoccupied with becoming tech tycoons than tomato tenders, the work of Duncan Family Farms (and their contribution to the CCOF Foundation’s Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund) is invaluable.

The CCOF Foundation’s Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund (FOFGF) gives the next generation of organic farmers the opportunity to pursue their passions and learn how to farm adhering to the USDA organic standards. Since the Fund’s inception in 2014, CCOF has given over $500,000 in grants, affecting more than 30,000 students and teachers of organic agriculture from kindergarten through college. Contributions from Duncan Family Farms and our other supporters makes CCOF’s work possible.

Simply put, the Duncans love farming! They enjoy supporting the CCOF Foundation’s Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund, a program that allows students to discover their own love of land stewardship. Deep passion for organic farming underlies both Duncan Family Farms’ and the CCOF Foundation’s sense of urgency in getting the next generation educated in certified organic farming practices. It’s not only important for the future of the American food system, but also for families like the Duncans, who run highly successful ag businesses and are always on the lookout for talented new hires. Their donation to the CCOF Foundation’s Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund (FOFGF) is both an immediate and future solution to the aging farmer population. The Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund works to ensure that aging farmers can retire and leave their businesses in the hands of experienced, skilled, organic farmers.
