CCOF Opposes West Nile Spraying Program
CCOF believes that mandated spraying is the wrong way to contain the deadly West Nile Virus. Not only have large scale chemical applications caused more problems than they have purported to correct in the past, but never has a pesticide eliminated a native pest anywhere in the world. CCOF strongly encourages the development of multi-year policies that utilize physical, biological, and cultural controls for long range management of this truly important public health issue. Examples include elimination of standing water, predator habitat, and timely use of readily available materials such as Bacillus thuringiensis israeliensis which are effective, completely non-toxic to humans and wildlife, and acceptable for use on organic farms. This approach would better protect people from the virus without relying on harmful chemicals that have numerous side affects to humans, wildlife, and organic farmers.

Currently, many California counties are spraying for West Nile Virus. These include Sacramento, Yolo, Solano, Contra Costa, Alameda, and San Joaquin. For a comprehensive list of mosquito and vector control districts, you can refer to the Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California (MVCAC) which keeps a roster of members.
If you live in a West Nile Virus spray zone, there are things you can do to decrease the chances of being bitten by an infected mosquito. These are called THE 7 Ds:
DRAIN any standing water.
DAWN and
DUSK are times to avoid being outside, when mosquitoes are most active.
DRESS appropriately by wearing long sleeves and pants.
DEFEND yourself against mosquitoes by wearing an effective mosquito repellant.
DOOR and window screens should be in good operating order.
DISTRICTS are available -- call your local mosquito and vector control district for more information or to report standing water.
